How to get a £10 railcard (normally £20-£30)
If you possess an annual gold card as part of your train season ticket, you’ll enjoy additional discounts not available with a standard season ticket. A major advantage is the opportunity to purchase a railcard for only £10, which is up to 66% cheaper than the regular price, and you can buy it for yourself or another person.
This discount is applicable only to individuals in the southern region of England, but if you qualify, it can be quite beneficial. Railcards typically provide a one-third discount on most fares—check out detailed information on the benefits of each railcard.
How do I get a gold card?
To participate, you must possess an annual gold card, which will be either your physical season ticket or issued alongside it. If you purchased a yearly season ticket or Travelcard (excluding weekly or monthly options) from any of the over 600 stations listed on the annual gold card area map, you should have received one automatically. It’s important that at least one of the stations on your ticket is located within the designated area.
While this option isn’t available across much of the UK, the gold card area encompasses a significant portion of southern England.
Which railcards can I get for £10?
You have the option to select from a variety of prominent national railcards, including the 16-25 Railcard, Family & Friends Railcard, Two Together Railcard, Senior Railcard, and the Network Railcard, which is valid in London and the southern regions of England. Each of these typically costs £30, while the Disabled Person’s Railcard is usually priced at £20. These railcards provide a discount of one-third on the majority of journeys—check out all the available railcard options.
Additionally, you can obtain one annual railcard for just £10 at any point during the period your annual gold card remains valid.
Don’t have a gold card? You can still get a £10 railcard
The individual purchasing the railcard doesn’t necessarily have to be the one utilizing it.
Therefore, if a friend or family member who regularly commutes possesses a gold card, simply request that they buy the £10 railcard for you if it’s not needed by them. They can then proceed with the steps outlined below. Beforehand, check the Railcard website to confirm your eligibility and ensure you provide the gold card holder with any necessary photos or documentation to prove your eligibility.
You can only buy the £10 railcard from a station
If you acquired your annual season ticket directly from a train station, you must obtain your railcard from the same location. Conversely, if your season ticket was purchased online, you can acquire the railcard at your nearest station. The only exception to this rule applies to those obtaining a Disabled Person’s Railcard—see the ‘More info’ section below for details.
Inform the staff that you wish to buy a £10 railcard using your gold card, and complete the application they provide. Certain railcards, such as the 16-25 and Senior, require a photo and proof of eligibility, so be sure to bring those along, as well as your gold card.
If you’re purchasing a railcard on behalf of someone else, Railcard indicates that the individual for whom you’re buying the railcard does not need to be present.
What other discounts does an annual gold card get?
While you are traveling within the designated annual gold card zone, your gold card offers many of the same rail fare discounts as all the primary railcards put together. In addition to serving as your commuting season ticket, it also provides you with:
- 34% off standard and first class off-peak train fares for you and up to three people travelling with you.
- 60% off for up to four kids (5-15 years old) travelling with you.
- One-third off Oyster pay-as-you-go, Anytime Day Travelcards, and PLUSBUS day tickets within the Network Railcard area.
These discounts can’t be used before 9.30am Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). See full terms and conditions.
What about the Disabled Person’s Railcard?
You can’t get a £10 Disabled Person’s Railcard at a station. You’ll need to either call the Disabled Person’s Railcard office on 0345 605 0525 or post a completed application form, evidence of eligibility, and a copy of the front and back of your gold card to: Disabled Persons Railcard office, PO Box 6613, Arbroath DD11 9AN.

Disabled Person’s Railcard £20 for one year
If you have a disability that complicates train travel, you might be eligible for a Disabled Person’s Railcard (refer to the section on ‘Are you eligible?’ below).
The railcard is priced at £20 for a single year or £54 for three years (which breaks down to £18 annually), providing a one-third discount on most train fares. If your eligible rail spending exceeds £60 in a year (or £55 if you hold a three-year card), obtaining one is a smart choice, as the savings surpass the card’s cost.
Unlike many other railcards, the Disabled Person’s Railcard imposes no time limitations on its usage, though it cannot be applied to season tickets. Additionally, when you travel with another adult, they too will benefit from the one-third discount. The accompanying adult does not need to have a disability but must stay with the cardholder for the entire journey to qualify for the discount.
Are you eligible?
You should qualify for a Disabled Person’s Railcard if…
- You are registered as deaf or use a hearing aid.
- You are registered as having a visual impairment.
- You receive personal independence payments (PIP) or adult disability payments (ADP).
- You receive disability living allowance (DLA) at either the higher or lower rate for the mobility component, or the higher or middle rate for the care component.
- You have epilepsy and have repeated attacks, even though you receive drug treatment, or are currently prohibited from driving because of epilepsy.
- You receive attendance allowance, severe disablement allowance, or pension age disability payment.
- You receive war pensioner’s mobility supplement.
- You receive war or service disablement pension for 80% or more disability.
- You buy or lease a vehicle through the motability scheme.
When applying, you’ll need to present proof of your eligibility—check the Disabled Person’s Railcard website for the types of documentation that are accepted.
While you cannot purchase the railcard directly at ticket offices in stations, you can obtain an application form there. You’ll need to fill it out and send it by mail, or you have the option to apply online for either a physical or digital card.
Can children get this railcard?
You can apply for a Disabled Person’s Railcard for your child (between the ages of 5 and 15) if they have a qualifying disability. While your child won’t receive discounted child fares, the card will enable one accompanying adult to benefit from a one-third discount on their ticket.
You need to have your railcard with you when travelling. If opting for a physical card, it’ll be sent via First Class post, but you’re best allowing up to five working days for delivery.
Railcards are not valid in Northern Ireland.
