United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid worldwide has reached 360 million, an increase of 30 percent compared to last year.

Guterres spoke at the session held at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Noting that the number of people forcibly displaced has reached 110 million, Guterres emphasized that 260 million people face serious food insecurity and hunger.

Guterres stated that the main reason for this is unresolved conflicts and newly started wars, and said, “The global economic problems that started during the Covid-19 period and worsened with the Russian invasion of Ukraine hit the most vulnerable.”

Pointing out that civilians had to pay an “unacceptable” price for violations of international law by the parties to the conflict, Guterres said, “The global humanitarian crisis is proof that we cannot act collectively against the most serious problems of our time.”

“The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance worldwide has reached 360 million, an increase of 30 percent compared to last year,” Guterres said.
