Inflation increased in Tokyo in May as well

Tokyo core inflation increased by 1.9 percent in May; Japan’s industrial production recorded a surprise decline in April.

Core inflation in Tokyo, Japan’s capital, increased by 1.9 percent in May, following the 1.6 percent increase in April. Data for May came in line with economists’ expectations.

Tokyo’s inflation figures are considered a leading indicator of nationwide trends.

Separately, Japan’s industrial production figures showed a surprise decline of 0.1 percent in April compared to the previous month, despite economists’ forecast for a 0.9 percent increase.
