30 percent of the world’s electricity produced by clean sources

Last year, it was announced that 30 percent of global electricity production came from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy.

In the “Renewable 2023-Global Status Report” of the 21st Century Renewable Energy Policy Network (REN 21), it was stated that 37 of the 174 countries that aim to generate power using renewable energy sources aim to meet this production from completely clean sources.

According to the report, global renewable energy investments increased by 17.2 percent last year compared to the previous year, while the newly installed renewable energy capacity was 348 gigawatts in this period.

After the energy crisis that emerged with the Kovid-19 epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, while countries put energy security first in their national policies, renewable energy installations were emphasized due to reasons such as the fight against inflation, interruption of equipment supply, and fluctuations in energy prices.

While the effect of renewable energy transformation in the heat, fuel and electricity sectors in energy consumption came to the fore, the share of electricity, including heating and transportation, in global energy supply was 19 percent in 2010, while it reached 23 percent in 2020.

According to the report, electrification played a major role in meeting the energy needs of all sectors. Thus, while the share of renewable energy has increased in all sectors, 30 percent of global electricity production was provided from clean sources last year.

Solar and wind installations took the lead in investments.
The installed power added to the global electricity system last year increased by 13 percent compared to the previous year and reached 348 gigawatts.
Solar energy accounted for 70 percent of the installed power added during this period, wind power plants for 22 percent, and resources such as geothermal and biomass for the rest.
According to the report, in order for the additional capacity increase to reach the targets set by the countries in the fight against climate change, the increase in installed power must be 2.5 times higher than the current situation.
