Yellen’s China visit statement: A step forward

Speaking on her 4-day visit to Beijing, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that her long and constructive talks with Chinese officials will help stabilize US-China relations.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her meeting with Chinese officials was “direct, concrete and fruitful” and a step forward in restoring relations between the world’s two largest economies on “more solid ground”.

Yellen’s trip to Beijing comes at a time when Washington is considering imposing restrictions on US investment in China amid an escalating global war for technological supremacy. Yellen has become the second member of US President Joe Biden’s cabinet to visit Beijing in recent weeks amid efforts to stabilize ties between the two powers.

“There are significant disagreements between the US and China,” Yellen said. These disagreements need to be communicated openly and directly. But President Biden and I do not view the relationship between the United States and China as a great power conflict. We believe the world is big enough for both countries to thrive. “Both countries have an obligation to manage this relationship responsibly: find a way to live together and share global prosperity.”
