Tiktok decision from the USA: It will either be sold or banned

The US Senate approved the bill for TikTok, the social media platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. In the bill, TikTok will either be sold or banned within a year.

The US Senate approved the bill for TikTok, the social media platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

According to the bill, if TikTok is not sold to someone the United States deems appropriate, it will be banned in the country.

The measure, which includes aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, won broad bipartisan approval from senators concerned about the app collecting data from more than 170 million American users and the potential for China to use it for propaganda purposes.

President Joe Biden has said he would sign the measure into law. The legislation passed Tuesday night by a vote of 79 to 18.

The bill gives ByteDance about a year to sell TikTok before the app is banned. This comes after the election, to the disappointment of some lawmakers who worry Beijing could use the app to interfere in the election.

The company is already promising to fight the legislation in court. The US is a critical market for the social media behemoth that has become one of the world’s fastest-growing tech giants.
