The number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time in the USA increased to 229 thousand in the week ending June 1, exceeding expectations.

According to weekly data on unemployment benefit applications announced by the US Department of Labor, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time in the country increased by 8 thousand people compared to the previous week, reaching 229 thousand in the week ending June 1.

Market expectation was that the number of applications would be 220 thousand.

The previous week’s data on the number of unemployment benefit applications was revised upwards and increased from 219 thousand to 221 thousand.

As of last week, the 4-week average number of unemployment benefit applications decreased by 750 to 222 thousand 250.

The number of ongoing unemployment benefit applications increased by 2 thousand people in the week ending May 25, reaching 1 million 792 thousand, the highest level in 7 weeks.
