Unemployment in the UK exceeded expectations in March-May period

Unemployment in the UK increased by 0.2 percent in the 3-month period covering the March-May period compared to the previous 3-month period and rose to 4 percent. The expectation was for an increase of 3.8 percent.

According to the British Office of National Statistics (ONS), unemployment increased by 0.2 percent in the 3-month period covering the March-May period compared to the previous 3-month period and reached 4 percent. The increase in the number of those who have not worked for the last 12 months has been effective in the rise in the unemployment rate.

The expectation was that the unemployment rate would be 3.8 percent.

The employment rate in the country increased by 0.2 percent in this period and became 76 percent.

In the said period, the increase in the total wages of employees including bonuses was 6.9 percent, while the increase in their regular salaries, excluding bonuses, reached a record level with 7.3 percent. The expectation was that this rate would be 7.1 percent.

In real terms (adjusted for inflation), total and regular wages fell by 1.2 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively, during this period.
