New car sales in the EU increased in May

Total sales in the European Union (EU) automobile market increased by 18.5 percent last month, reaching 938 thousand 950.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has announced the new car registration data of EU countries for May.

Accordingly, new automobile sales in EU countries increased by 18.5 percent last month compared to the same period of 2022 and reached 938 thousand 950.

New vehicle registrations in the member countries of the Union increased by 18 percent in January-May 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 4 million 393 thousand 951.

36.5 percent of new cars sold in EU countries in May are gasoline, 25 percent hybrid, 14.3 percent diesel, 13.8 percent all-electric, 7.4 percent plug-in hybrid and 3 percent. It was also made up of other fuels.

Electric car sales in EU countries increased by 70.9 percent in May compared to the same period last year, reaching 129,847.

Automobile sales among EU countries increased by 23.1 percent in Italy, 19.2 percent in Germany and 14.8 percent in France in May compared to the same period last year.

Among the 27 member countries of the Union, the highest number of new cars were put on the road in Germany in May. During this period, 246 thousand 966 new cars were registered in Germany, 149 thousand 373 in Italy, 145 thousand 536 in France and 92 thousand 25 in Spain.

According to the manufacturers, the VW Group sold the most new cars in the EU in May, with 243,13.
Stellantis Group followed VW Group in new vehicle sales in EU. Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel, sold 170 thousand 296 cars.
Renault Group took the third place with 104 thousand 89 new cars, while Hyundai Group took the fourth place with 78 thousand 473 vehicles.
