EU is disturbed by the abundance of automobiles coming from China

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Europe should take a tough stance against subsidized electric car imports from China.

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in her speech at the 36th Ordinary General Assembly of the Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU) held in Berlin, stated that Europe should protect itself against the abundance of electric cars coming from China.

Explaining that economic competition between the EU and China should be fair and imbalances should be eliminated, von der Leyen said, “Fair competition is good. What we do not like is that China fills our market with highly subsidized electric vehicles. We must fight this and protect our industry.”

The EU launched an investigation in October 2023, citing the fact that electric cars imported from China to the Union member countries were “distorting the market”.

The EU sees China as an economic and systemic rival, as well as a negotiating partner for the Union. The Union, which has export-oriented economies, has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of China’s opening up to the global economy for years.

Recently, the fact that the latest technologies in automobiles come from China and Beijing’s cheaper production compared to the continent have caused concerns in Europe.
