In Japan, engine manufacturer IHI Corporation reported that a subsidiary of its subsidiary falsified fuel efficiency data on 4,361 engines.

According to the company statement, data fraud was detected in 4,361 engines produced by IHI Power Systems, a company within the company, for both domestic and overseas markets since 2003.

It was determined that the data was distorted in order to “make the fuel economy look better” in the engines tested in the subsidiary company’s facilities in Niigata and Gunma provinces.

IHI Senior Manager Morita Hideo, at the press conference he held, regarding the incident, which he described as “betrayal of customers’ trust”, said, “We are in a grave situation where the foundations of our production are shaken.” said.

The process of revealing distorted data was carried out by IHI Power Systems Co. It was reported that it started when the staff reported the situation in February.

The engines in question are patrol vessels belonging to the Japan Coast Guard, Hokkaido Railway Co. It was determined that it was used in trains belonging to the company and fishing boats belonging to local municipalities.

The Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan instructed the manufacturer IHI and its subsidiary to investigate the incident and take precautions against its recurrence.
