The number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time in the USA reached the highest level in the last 6 months with 231 thousand people in the week ending May 4.

The US Department of Labor announced weekly data on unemployment benefits applications.

Accordingly, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time in the country increased by 22 thousand people compared to the previous week, reaching 231 thousand in the week ending May 4.

The number of applications, which reached the highest level after November 2023, was expected to be 212 thousand.

The previous week’s data on the number of unemployment benefit applications was also revised upwards and increased from 208 thousand to 209 thousand.

As of last week, the 4-week average number of unemployment benefit applications increased by 4 thousand 750 to 215 thousand.

The number of ongoing unemployment benefit applications increased by 17 thousand people in the week ending April 27, reaching 1 million 785 thousand.
