Sharp decline in Tesla Chinese-made car sales

US electric car manufacturer Tesla sold 62,167 Chinese-made electric vehicles in April, down 18 percent compared to the previous year.

According to data published by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday, Tesla sold 62,167 Chinese-made electric vehicles in April, down 18 percent compared to the previous year.

Deliveries of Chinese-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles fell 30.2 percent compared to March. Tesla’s Chinese-made cars are exported to various markets, including Europe.

According to CPCA data, China’s sales of new energy vehicles, including battery-powered electric vehicles and rechargeable hybrids, are estimated to reach 800 thousand units in April. This means an annual increase of 33 percent and a decrease of 2 percent compared to the previous month.

BYD, Tesla’s biggest Chinese rival, sold 312 thousand 48 passenger vehicles in April, with an annual increase of 48.97 percent.

Tesla saw vehicle deliveries fall for the first time in nearly four years in the first quarter. The company kicked off the second quarter by announcing it would lay off more than 10 percent of its global workforce and slash vehicle prices in major markets including the U.S., China and Europe.

Deliveries of Tesla’s Chinese-made electric vehicles increased 0.2 percent in March, after falling 19 percent on an annual basis in February. However, this decrease was accompanied by a 25 percent decrease in total electric vehicle sales in China in February.
