Apple’s iPad is under the influence of the EU’s digital coup

Under the EU’s ‘Digital Services Act’, Apple has 6 months to comply with a set of new rules. The company’s iOS mobile operating system, App Store and Safari browser are currently targeted by the law.

Apple’s iPad has been added to the list of major technology products and services targeted by new European Union rules aimed at stopping potential antitrust violations before they occur.

The EU enacted the ‘Digital Services Law’ at the beginning of March.

This move means that Apple’s tablet ecosystem must comply with a series of preventive measures under the EU’s ‘Digital Services Act’ within 6 months. The company’s iOS mobile operating system, App Store and Safari browser are currently targeted by the law.

EU competition official Margrethe Vestager said in a statement that the EU’s decision to include the iPad within the scope of the Digital Services Act will ensure the protection of fairness and competition. Vestager said research has shown that “iPadOS provides an important gateway for many companies to reach their customers.”

With the decision, the company will have to adapt the operating system to fulfill a number of obligations and prohibitions, such as iPad users being able to download applications from outside Apple borders or uninstalling pre-installed applications on the devices.

With the ‘Digital Services Act’, Microsoft as well as Apple; Meta; Alphabet; Google; Amazon.com and TikTok owner ByteDance stand out as companies targeted for new liabilities aimed at preventing them from abusing their dominance.
