Meta opens Quest OS to 3rd party device manufacturers

Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced that it is opening the Quest operating system to third-party device manufacturers.

Meta Platforms announced in a statement that it is sharing the operating system of the Quest headset with rival device manufacturers, including Microsoft, for the first time, as it tries to expand its influence on the emerging virtual and mixed reality industry.

The move will allow partner companies to build their headsets using Meta Horizon OS, a rebranded operating system that brings capabilities like gesture recognition, morphing, scene understanding and spatial stabilization to devices running on it, the company said in a blog post.

On the other hand, the social media company announced that its partners Asus and Lenovo will use the operating system to create devices suitable for certain activities. Meta is also using it to make a limited-edition version of the Quest headset “inspired by” Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console, the company said.
