U.S. jobless claims beat expectations

The weekly jobless claims, published by the US Department of Labor, rose by 6 thousand to 227 thousand. The expectation was that this figure would not be 225 thousand.

The US Department of Labor has released data on weekly jobless claims.

Unemployment benefit applications were close to the lowest levels of the year, while flexible demand for workers drew attention.

Accordingly, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits for the first time in the country increased by 6 thousand people in the week ending July 29 compared to the previous week and rose to 227 thousand.

The applications, which exceeded the market expectations, were expected to be realized at the level of 225 thousand.

Ongoing applications, including those who have received assistance for more than a week, rose to 1.7 million in the week until July 22.

Low application numbers, historically low unemployment levels and layoffs highlight the existence of a strong labor market, while factors such as slowing wage growth and fewer job vacancies point to some softening.

However, a report released Thursday by Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed that layoffs announced in July by US-based employers were down 8 percent year-on-year.
