US House of Representatives requested information on the content of Threads

Jim Jordan, Chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee, requested information about the content regulations of Meta’s new social media platform Threads, a rival to Twitter, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

In a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Jordan requested that documents related to Threads’ content moderation practices be sent to the Committee.

Noting that they have obtained evidence that the federal government is forcing or collaborating with technology, social media and other companies to monitor online content, Jordan expressed the Committee’s concerns about “whether the executive branch is censoring and repressing within the scope of freedom of expression.”

In his letter, Jordan recalled that on July 4, a federal court ruled that the government’s collusion and censorship with social media platforms violated constitutional rights and that Meta played a central role in this context.

“Threads raises serious, specific concerns as it’s marketed as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter, which has suffered political persecution from the (Joe) Biden administration after his commitment to free speech.” Jordan claimed that there were reports that Threads was already censoring.

Jordan requested Meta to submit all relevant documents in this regard to the Committee by 31 July.
